The Proven Guide to Pick a Profitable Niche for Your Blog

Picking a profitable niche when looking to start a blog and the one in which you have passions for is the most difficult – this can make or break your business.

Many a times, I’ve seen people face situations where they decide to blog on a niche because it’s just profitable but they don’t have the passion for it.

On the other hand, I’ve also seen people where people just pick a niche they have passion for, even if the niche doesn’t have a market demand. The first case is worse because without love and passion for your work, you won’t be able to move a single step ahead, whereas the second case may be a little better than the first because sometimes, you can create a market, if you know the way. This is how things work when you want to make money online.

I can tell you from my own experience. Prior to starting this blog, when I was in school, I had a blog on Blogspot on dog niche. I’d heard from one of my senior friends that time who was also into blogging that pets related niche was very profitable and had high CPC.

With a lot of enthusiasm, I just started the blog out of fun with a hope of earning few bucks that’ll help me just cover my pocket money. 2 months didn’t go, I quit blogging, not because I didn’t love writing but I didn’t love writing on anything related to pets.

Nothing came out of my mind automatically. It was becoming like a hectic job every day. Visiting other’s blogs and rewriting their articles. I couldn’t put anything based on my experiences or opinions.

I quit blogging within 2 months of starting the pets’ blog.

Lesson I learnt: Pick the right niche about which you can keep writing on and on.

After that, life has its own turns, and finally, after few years, spending time in research, analyzing the market, analyzing myself, gathering my thoughts, and most importantly, understanding the niche I’ve passion for, I started this blog. I’m completely happy now, earning much to pass-off a job to some friend in need, and blogging is no more like a work for me.

The niche I’m blogging in gives me a sense of happiness.

Based on my experiences and the ones I’ve heard from people till now, I feel picking the niche of your blog plays an important part.

Points to Remember before picking a niche for your blog

You’ve to produce content that others will love reading and sharing without convincing.

You’ve to read, write and talk about topics on your niche for several years.

You’ve to write in a way that’ll make the content irresistible

You’ve to answer any sorts of questions your readers ask in your niche. So, even if you don’t know it, you must have the interest to search about it and answer it.

I’ll explain you step by step how to pick a niche for your blog.

You need to spend some time but it will be worth the time spent.

Self-analysis is the first and foremost task you cannot neglect. Understanding exactly what you want is the most need.

Follow your heart, not your mind – and you’ll succeed in every sphere of your life.

So, figure this out – what you want to do, what topics you’re going to share with the world, if you keep on talking about the topic for many years to come, if you can speak on the topic without any research.

When answering these questions in your mind, forget about profit or about market demand. Just focus and try to analyze your passion for a subject by going deep within yourself.

If possible, write them down in a piece of paper or better will be to record them as you speak with your mind alone, analyzing yourself.

Once you know your passion, it’s time for market research.

If you research a little on Google about the niches you have in mind, you’ll see that all the good niches are already taken.

So, does that mean “You’ve to give up?”

No… there are lots of opportunities and an infinite amount of ideas that you can turn into successful online businesses, even if the market is saturated.

You need the time to figure it out.

If you think to start on something brand new and no one has worked on it earlier, you won’t find it. Even if you do, you’re playing in an unknown territory.

So, it’s better to pick a niche for your blog that others are already exploring but work on making it better from the ones who’ve already been into it.

For example, Dean Kamen discovered the Segway PT in 2001 to bring a revolution in how people walked and the way the cities were designed.

But did this have much effect?

No.

What happened?

The product is now banned on the sidewalks of 30 states of USA.

Now, take the example of Tesla motors. It’s a company manufacturing cars, which is already a saturated market but the company was started in 2003 with the aim of make cars better and more efficient.

In 2013, the Model S of Tesla for the award of Motor Trend Car of the Year.

So, even if all good ideas are taken, there is high competition, market is saturated, at the end of the day, the thing that matters when picking a niche for your blog is what people are getting from you compared to others.

Give them better.

So, how to find what’s better?

Think from the aspect of a customer. Understand the exact consumer needs, better yet is to purchase a product of the market and find what more you need from the product.

Join forums, participate in discussions with consumers of the market, and figure out what exactly you need to improve.

Think you are starting a blog on weight loss. There’s already tens of thousands of blogs on the topic. So, shouldn’t you pick that as a niche for your blog?

But the only way you can set yourself apart from the rest is by making things easier and better for them.

Let’s take a real-life example – A Weight Loss Blog

A friend of mine, Silviu, was about to start a blog on weight loss. He’s a fitness consultant and has helped many renowned celebrities to get in shape and create a great lifestyle. So, he was wondering if he could also reach out with his services online and people were looking for such information.

I had to help him a bit with picking a niche for his blog.

Use the Google Keyword Planner, which is a free tool, or Hittail, which is a paid tool to find related keywords. These tools helps a lot to find keywords and help in search engine rankings.

Here are the results I got for him when I searched for “fitness programs”, it had almost 1900 searches per month.

Again, when I searched for another niche-related term “weight loss”, there’s almost 90,500 searches for the exact word.

Analyzing the results of these the two searches, here’s what I found.

1. Fitness program has a good amount of searches but the keyword is too wide, so narrowing down to fitness program for women will work better.

2. Weight loss has a huge number of searches but the term again is too wide and not so perfect from the point of a fitness consultant willing to start a blog. If you scroll down, you’ll see a little, people are looking for motivation for weight loss and it has pretty good amount of searches and low competition, which means, the niche isn’t so much covered yet and still has scope. People are also searching to calculate the amount of weight they lost, meaning they not only want to lose weight but exactly know how much they lost.

3. If you want to target locally, you can further dig into the research with the keyword + state name.

However, since I’m not a fitness consultant myself, I decided to dig a little more into the keyword and searched more related keywords in Google that people were actually searching for. Here’s what I got.

People were searching for motivational quotes, ideas and tips for weight loss, and also weight loss coach.

So, ultimately, what I’m saying is that you don’t need to select a small niche to start a blog but work on a specialized niche to make a successful blog.

It should be a niche that actually interests you – the competition doesn’t matter.

As time goes and you share more and more information with your readers, people should consider you as the ULTIMATE GO-TO RESOURCE.

Anytime they face a problem related to your niche, your blog or website should be the first thing that should come to their mind. And when they really come, the answers should be there to solve their problem.

So, as you see in the example above, the niche “weight loss” Silviu was choosing to work in was huge but since he was a fitness consultant, he was actually motivating others in regular life for keeping themselves fit and finally chalking them down their lifestyle, goals and programs.

Online too, he decided to go for this. He worked as a fitness consultant but with specialization in motivation, which made people reach out to him whenever anyone faced with depression or lack of motivation.

We are in an era where every topic has been covered under the sun but still you need to create your own space and pick a niche for your blog that you specialize in and can contribute to better than others.

This will what make you different and stand out.

Well, very blog income model is different. Many bloggers income model is based directly on ads, affiliate income, whereas others use their blog to put up their services and products, even others, use their blog to promote some other business at the back end.

So, when you say a term to be profitable, it depends on what model you’re using. If you’re searching for a keyword in Keyword Planner or Hittail, the CPC may be very low but that doesn’t matter, if your blog income model is based on the services you offer.

We have reached a point where you can make a full-time income with your online business but you need to know how and where.
