I am asked this question, “What is a blog” several times by many of my friends when I have a direct conversation with them, via instant chats and sometimes even by friends on my Facebook.
Well, especially in India, not many are still aware of blogging though there are some top bloggers in India such as Amit Agarwal, already earning $,$$,$$$/per month.
So, better late than never, if you are already into Facebook and Twitter is, you should know what a blog is – otherwise you’re not living in the 21st century!
Before I give my explanation on blogging, here are few definitions from much wiser and respected people.
A weblog is a hierarchy of text, images, media objects and data, arranged chronologically, that can be viewed in an HTML browser. Source
A blog (a truncation of the expression web log) is a discussion or informational site published on the World Wide Web and consisting of discrete entries (“posts”) typically displayed in reverse chronological order (the most recent post appears first). Source
A blog is an elementary task tantamount to explaining the wheel. Source
A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is “blogging” and someone who keeps a blog is a “blogger.” Blogs are typically updated daily using software that allows people with little or no technical background to update and maintain the blog. Postings on a blog are almost always arranged in chronological order with the most recent additions featured most prominently. It is common for blogs to be available as RSS feeds. Source
Now My Personal Definition of a Blog
Confused with all the technical definitions? Let me put it in simple terms. A blog is also a website set up in a chronological order with the latest posts (also called entries) starting from the top going towards the bottom with older entries.
Look at this live example of my blog here. You’ll find a section “What’s New Here” where the latest entries showing at the top to the older posts further down the section of the page.
A blog may have one author who solely publishes on the blog and updates it. Sometimes, blogs are also multi-authored (means, different people write on a blog).
A blog may focus on a particular topic or may be spread across various topics. There are blogs on all niches you can think of. From personal diaries to family, parenting, blogging, relationships, education, you can blog on almost every niche you can imagine.
Actually, I personally feel blogging helps create a community where you can learn, make friends, share ideas and do business with people all over the world interested in your niche. Blogs also help an already existing business to reach out to people and engage people with their products and services. This way, businesses can expand their growth by blogging and reach their target market.
Another great thing about blogs is that you can get feedback directly from people who read a blog. You can also create a conversation with the people through the little comment box you’ll find below the post. Let’s look at a live example. Below you can find “Comments” field with a name, and email field. Fill those up and leave what your heart says after reading this post. That’s all. You can ask a question, give your opinions, critique the post or leave a feedback.
That’s all about blogging. You already know the what blogging consists of, but to learn more you can leave comments or ask a question to which I’ll definitely answer. However, if you really want to learn more about blogs, then you have to start your own blog.
You must be laughing and saying yourself “I don’t have any tech knowledge to create a blog and I’ll start a blog! Isn’t this funny?”.
You may not know where to start or how to start.
But let me tell you a secret.
When I started working online about 4 years ago, I didn’t have any knowledge about Internet and you can read it here how I learned the hard way.
If you are a beginner interested to start a blog, I’d suggest you to start here and explore the world of blogging.
So, now that you know what a blog is, you can read what benefits you’ll get blogging (as a beginner blogger and as a business owner).
Or if you want to start blogging and make money online or build a business online right now but confused with the tools to use to get started, check the resources I use for my blogging business.
So, when do you think to put up your first blog? Have you already thought about the niche to start in?
